Spring has arrived and there are tons of Jaycee activities to get involved in both community and socially oriented including Bulls Concessions, Duck Races, Stamp Out Hunger, The Doughman, Project Graduation and Book Club.  We hope to see you out soon at one of the many events listed below:

Duck Races through the Chapel Hill Carrboro Sunrise Rotary Club have begun.  There is a link on our webpage to purchase ducks which can be found here or you can just bring a check made out to Sunrise Rotary into one of the next two meetings.  The race will be held on Saturday, June 2 but you don’t need to be present to win. Ducks can be purchased $10 for a single duck, 6 ducks for $50 or 13 ducks for $100.  We get a portion of the money that is made off any duck sale and the prizes are incredible.  Some of the prizes this year include a Seafood Dinner for 4 catered to your home by Legal Seafood, $1000 American Express Gift Card, 3 night/4 day beach cottage vacation at Sunset Beach, and an overnight at Graylyn Estate.

Sunday, 01 April 2012 00:00

It’s hard to believe that spring has already arrived and the Jaycees are kicking it into high gear with the DSA awards banquet, Durham Bull’s concessions and book club.

Tuesday, April 10th, we will be hosting the Distinguished Service Awards Banquet at the Thomas Center.  Join us for this special evening honoring members of the Durham community for their service.  In addition to presenting the awards, John Schelp will be speaking about Durham and his experiences being a leader in the community. We ask that you please RSVP by noon on April 6th, if you plan to attend this meeting so that we can provide a head count to the Thomas Center.

March
Thursday, 01 March 2012 00:00

Fellow Jaycees,

Warmer weather seems to be heading our way and as such we are about to begin our busy season with the DSA awards, Doughman, Bulls Concessions,  and the Duck Race fundraiser just around the corner.

Thursday, March 8 several of us will be volunteering at Urban Ministries Empty Bowl fundraiser.  They don’t need any more volunteers, but it should be a really fun charity event. If you are free, you should consider coming out to support them at the main event or at the after party.  The Empty Bowl Fundraiser is from 5:30 to 8pm at the Durham Armory and you can purchase Soup for $15 or soup and a bowl for $30.  The after party begins at 8p at Full Steam Brewery and includes a food truck round-up.  A portion of the food truck sales will be going to Urban Ministry’s, as well.  To learn more about this event please visit Urban Ministries of Durham’s website: http://www.umdurham.org/

January
Sunday, 01 January 2012 00:00

Fellow Jaycees,

Happy New Years!  I hope that everyone has had a wonderful beginning to the year.  I have some important updates about the format for this year’s Jaycee meetings.  The board has decided to reduce our membership dues for renewing members from $225 down to $150 this year both to make our organization more financially stable and in the hopes of recruiting more members.  As a result of the cost reduction we will be meeting in two different locations.

2nd Tuesday of the month will remain at the Thomas Center for a more formal dinner meeting with a community speaker.

4th Tuesday of the month we will be moving to the Durham Main library located at 300 N. Roxboro Street, Durham NC 27701.  We will be holding our membership meetings at the library and then heading out to a restaurant in downtown for dinner and drinks.  The board hopes that this will give us all the opportunity to discover a bit more about Durham’s constantly changing downtown. For directions to the library please check out: http://www.durhamcountylibrary.org/locations/main_directions.php.
